Honor Show Showlamb Grower 15% DX

Complete textured base feed for growing and finishing show lambs — lower protein, higher energy, suited for heavily-muscled breed types and finishing phase

Always read and follow product labels for feeding and sheep safety.

Overview

Honor Show Showlamb Grower 15% DX is Purina’s primary show lamb base feed for the grow and finish phases. A textured complete feed combining processed grains, cottonseed hulls, premix pellet, and molasses, it’s designed to drive accelerated growth and appropriate fat cover in modern show lambs. Medicated with Decoquinate (Deccox) for coccidiosis prevention. The 15% protein level is lower than some competing base feeds — suited for heavily-muscled breed types or lambs in the finishing phase who don’t need additional protein push. Requires quality hay supplementation (minimum ¼ flake or ½ lb/day).

How Experienced Feeders Actually Use It

Honor Show Chow Grower 15% is the Purina-ecosystem base feed equivalent to Evolution Low Pro in the Evolution lineup — a lower-protein, higher-energy option for lambs in the middle and finishing phases of the program. Feeders who use the Purina system lean on this feed as the backbone of the program and layer High Octane supplements on top. It competes directly with Evolution Show Lamb as a base feed brand; feeder preference often comes down to regional availability and personal results.

Real-World Feeding Rate

  • Typical rate: 3% of body weight as total daily intake (base feed + supplements combined)
  • Introduction timeline: 7-day transition recommended when switching from another feed

Common Deviations from Label

Show feeders running limit-fed programs often target 2.5% of body weight in the final weeks to control condition and hold rather than build. The 4% ceiling is used for lambs that are behind on weight or need faster growth early in the project.

Breed-Specific Notes

The 15% protein level is intentionally positioned for heavily-muscled breeds (Suffolk, Hampshire) or for finishing phases where muscle-building drive should slow and fat/bloom should take over. Lambs that need more protein push early in the project may start on the 18% version and transition down.

Phase Protocols

Weeks 12–9 | Foundation Phase

  • Rate: 3–4% body weight/day
  • Purpose: Establish growth trajectory; 15% protein is sufficient if lamb has good muscle base. Consider 18% version if more protein push is needed early.

Weeks 8–6 | Condition Building Phase

  • Rate: 3% body weight/day
  • Purpose: Continue growth and muscle development; begin layering High Octane supplements

Weeks 5–3 | Fill & Shaping Phase

  • Rate: 2.5–3% body weight/day
  • Purpose: Transition toward holding and finishing; reduce alfalfa hay, increase beet pulp

Weeks 2–1 | Final Prep Phase

  • Rate: 2.5% body weight/day — hold consistent
  • Purpose: Maintain condition, do not push for more gain in final 2 weeks

Stacking Protocols

Designed to be the base that all High Octane supplements layer on top of. Works with the full High Octane lineup. Requires quality hay alongside — not a standalone complete feed without roughage.

Budget Alternatives

  • Regional livestock feeds at similar protein/energy levels may be available at lower cost
  • Evolution Show Lamb feeds are the most direct competitor in markets where both are available
