16% Sheep and Goat Pellet

General-purpose medicated pellet for growing sheep and goats — 16% protein growing/maintenance ration; Decoquinate for coccidiosis prevention

Always read and follow product labels for feeding and sheep safety.

Overview

The 16% Sheep and Goat Pellet is Hi-Pro’s general-purpose growing ration for sheep and goats — a medicated, 16% protein pellet with Decoquinate for coccidiosis prevention. It is not marketed as a show-specific product, but functions as a growing-phase base in show programs, particularly as an economical option or when the Apex line is unavailable. Notable for its very high Vitamin A fortification (19,000 IU/lb — among the highest in the database). Copper is listed at 9–10 ppm, which falls within the standard documented safe range for sheep but is at the upper end of that range; confirmation from Hi-Pro is advisable before use in a sheep-only program.

Official Feeding Rate

  • Rate: 3.0–4.0% of body weight per day
    • Example: 60 lb lamb → 1.8–2.4 lb/day; 90 lb lamb → 2.7–3.6 lb/day
  • Species notes: Sheep and goats
  • Medication: Feed during periods of coccidiosis exposure; maintain for 28+ days continuously

Ca:P Ratio

Calcium 1.0–1.5% / Phosphorus not listed → Phosphorus value not confirmed. Ca:P cannot be calculated. Flag for review.

Sheep Safety

Copper: Listed at 9–10 ppm. This is within the broadly cited safe range for sheep (4–25 ppm), but at the upper end of what most extension sources recommend for routine sheep feeding (target 4–8 ppm for optimal range). The “Sheep and Goat” labeling suggests the formulation is intentionally copper-safe, but at 9–10 ppm it is notably higher than beef-cattle safe products would need to be. Verify with Hi-Pro before use in a sheep-only program.

Vitamin A: 19,000 IU/lb is high — the highest confirmed value in the database for a base feed. At normal feeding rates (2–3 lb/day), a 90 lb lamb would consume approximately 40,000–57,000 IU/day. Vitamin A toxicity in lambs is documented at sustained high doses; confirm with a livestock nutritionist whether this level is appropriate for the feeding duration and lamb age in your specific program.

Urinary calculi (wethers): Phosphorus not listed — Ca:P cannot be assessed. Calcium 1.0–1.5% is favorable, but without the phosphorus value this cannot be confirmed safe for wethers without further information.

Show Circuit Use

Primary Role

This is a background growing ration — used in show programs primarily as an economical base when the Apex line isn’t the right fit, or as a feed used by breeders before lambs enter a show feeding program. It is not show-specific in its marketing. No show circuit use documentation found.

Phase Protocols

Growing Phase (Weeks 12–6 Before Show)

  • Rate: 3.0–4.0% of body weight
  • Purpose: Provide 16% protein growing ration with coccidiosis prevention; high Vitamin A fortification may benefit immune status during show circuit stress
